Tax Advisory Manager

Tax team (you will be the founding member!)

Tax Advisory Manager

£55,000–£70,000 DOE | Hybrid (1 day in office) | Manchester (M3) or Stokenchurch (HP14) | Full-time or part-time

At striveX, we deliver trusted accounting and tax solutions to ambitious, values-led business owners.

We’re hiring a Tax Advisory Manager to establish and develop our tax advisory function.

This is a new position within striveX and an opportunity for an experienced tax professional to build something rather than step into an established tax department.

You will report directly to the Directors and work across clients managed by our Year End and Business Services teams. You will not have a portfolio of your own or responsibility for managing staff — instead, you will operate as the firm’s technical tax specialist, identifying opportunities within our client base and leading advisory projects from initial conversation through to delivery.

As the function grows, there will be an opportunity to build and ultimately lead a dedicated tax team.

Tax advisory services

  • Corporation tax planning
  • Capital gains tax
  • Business Asset Disposal Relief
  • Share disposals and business sales
  • Company reorganisations and restructures
  • Holding company and group structures
  • Share-for-share exchanges
  • Property taxation
  • Transaction and M&A tax support
  • Succession and exit planning
  • HMRC clearance applications
  • R&D tax relief
  • Capital allowances
  • EMI and share schemes
  • EIS and SEIS

There may also be opportunities to support clients with international and cross-border tax and Inheritance tax matters depending on your experience.

The opportunity

You will work alongside our managers and Directors to identify where clients would benefit from additional tax advice, scope the work and deliver the advice directly to the client. The role has three key objectives: improve the depth of tax advice we provide to clients, free our accounting managers from more complex technical tax work, and develop tax advisory into a dedicated service line within striveX.

You will be responsible for:

  • Proactively identifying tax advisory opportunities across the existing client base
  • Leading tax advisory meetings with clients
  • Understanding a client’s business, ownership structure and future plans before recommending appropriate tax strategies
  • Researching and advising on complex UK tax matters
  • Preparing clear, technically robust written tax advice
  • Scoping and pricing tax advisory projects
  • Managing advisory projects from initial identification through to completion
  • Working directly with the Directors and accounting managers on complex client matters
  • Participating in new-client meetings where specialist tax input is required
  • Reviewing corporation tax returns and computations where technical input is required
  • Training our accounting teams to recognise tax planning and advisory opportunities
  • Maintaining the firm’s technical knowledge of relevant tax legislation and developments
  • Developing processes, templates and standards for the tax advisory function
  • Helping shape the services the tax function provides as it grows

This is a technical and client-facing role with significant autonomy.

What we are looking for

Essential:

  • ACA / ACCA and/or CTA qualified
  • 5+ years’ UK accountancy practice experience
  • Strong UK tax technical knowledge
  • Significant experience working with owner-managed businesses
  • Experience delivering tax advisory work directly to clients
  • Experience reviewing corporation tax returns and computations
  • Confidence leading client meetings independently
  • Ability to research complex tax matters and reach technically supported conclusions
  • Ability to turn complex tax legislation into clear, practical advice for business owners
  • Strong written communication skills and experience producing formal tax advice
  • Commercial awareness and the ability to scope and price advisory work
  • Ability to operate independently without requiring day-to-day technical supervision

CTA qualification is preferred but not essential for an otherwise exceptional candidate.

We would consider an experienced Assistant Tax Manager who can demonstrate that they are already operating technically and commercially at the level required to step into this position.

You will not be suitable if:

  • Your experience is predominantly tax compliance with limited advisory exposure
  • You are not confident leading client meetings independently
  • You need regular technical supervision to deliver advisory work
  • You prefer receiving tax work rather than proactively identifying opportunities
  • You are looking primarily for a people-management position
  • You do not have UK accountancy practice experience

We are looking for someone who can operate with autonomy and become the technical point of reference for tax advisory matters within the firm.

Our client base

  • Predominantly limited companies
  • Founder-led, growth-focused and owner-managed businesses
  • Increasingly larger and more complex clients
  • No audit, charity or agriculture
  • Values-aligned clients

Working pattern

  • Hybrid: 1 day per week in office
  • Manchester (M3 2BY) or Stokenchurch (HP14 3FE)
  • Full-time or part-time considered
  • Flexitime
  • Must live within a 60-minute commute
  • Valid UK driving licence and access to a car

Salary

£55,000–£70,000 depending on experience and technical depth. We are open to an excellent Assistant Tax Manager making the step up, as well as an established Tax Manager looking for greater autonomy and the opportunity to build a function.

Why this role is different

  • Build a new tax advisory function rather than inherit an established department
  • Direct access to the Directors
  • Significant autonomy over how the tax offering develops
  • Predominantly advisory rather than compliance work
  • Work across a high-quality and increasingly complex owner-managed business client base
  • No responsibility for maintaining your own recurring compliance portfolio
  • No initial staff-management responsibility
  • Opportunity to build and ultimately lead a dedicated tax team
  • High engagement culture
  • Annual workcation
  • Ongoing personal and professional development
  • Continuous growth creating new opportunities

For the right tax professional, this is an opportunity to help decide what a modern tax advisory function should look like and then build it.
